Hello There Everyone –

Kind a crashing the board to say “hi. I played in the SYB Swing Band in the early ‘80s – yeah, that was a lot of fun. I caught the first train leavin’ after high school graduation – but I recently moved back to Sacramento (2007). How wonderful is it  to see so many talented women musicians today, especially in Jazz?!?! Well, thanks for letting me drop by. I still play sax, if anyone is looking for a tenor player, or if you just want to say "hi" (I recognize a few names), just drop me a line!

peace.....Lisa

What a DELIGHT to visit the past with the hiostory section of the Savramento Youth Band's Site.

I was a string bass player in the Jr. Band in the mid 60's and in the Sr Band in the late 60's. My Brother Dan O'Connell was also a Bass player in the Sr Band.

I have NEVER forgotten the fun I had while playing  and learning Bass while in the band. I can;t think of a MORE worthwhile organization. Especially now with all the school Music program cutbacks.

I remember Russ Kilne VERY well and probably don;t go a week without remembering the joy I shared in this organization.

To this day I miss my Bass. I gavce it up in the late 60's to go into Ballet and NOTHING has ever fullfilled me like the Bass did. Imagine a 55 year old starting to play the string bass again.

Thank you for passing on this legacy to all the kids out there who deserve this experience and for carrying on Russ Kline's legacy and vision.

With Fondness,

Kathleen Oliver
( formerally Kathy O'Connell)

Dang! I only just found out about the 50th reunion and I can't believe I missed it! Earl Lundquist told me about it just today. Ahhh, the memories: staying up all night on the trip down to disneyland, the Portugese Parades, The Old Sac Parade (and cleaning up Old Sac at 6am during the Dixieland Jazz Festival), The Music Man at Music Circus, the 1984 Olympics in Santa Barbara, the list goes on and on.

My daughter, Kristen called me here in Colorado, right before the start of March of the Olympians and I was able to listen to the rest of the concert. Great job!! It really sounded good (as good as it can sound over a cell phone). Black Saddle sure took me back to the many parades in which we marched. Got a bit choked up. Dannie Balser also sounded great. All-in-all, a very enjoyable evening. Glad it was such a resounding success! Go SYB and alumni!!!

Sept 1, 2007 I have just returned home from the SYB 50th Reunion, what a perfect evening. It was great seeing old friends and reliving good memories. The concert was wonderful, I could close my eyes and see the band coming down the street. Those who worked so hard to make it all happen are to be thanked over and over again. Bev Lindfeldt

I just saw that I missed the deadline for the reunion band (by three weeks), but maybe I can wiggle my way in somehow. Looking forward to seeing and playing with all of you again. I've been reading through the Alumni section (GREAT website, BTW) and the stories are amazing...and I'm jealous of how well you're all aging.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you again. I only wish Bob and Scott could be here too (Bob passed away Nov. 2005 and as most of you know Scott passed away in June 1991). Bob really loved conducting the Junior Band and originating and conducting the Stage Band. And I have wonderfully fond memories of the concerts, trips and parades I attended, for that I thank you all. Bev Lindfeldt

I am looking forward to playing in a real band again. I hope to be there for the rehearsal on the 27th. I haven't touched a bass clarinet in 28 years so it should be fun.

Thanks very much to Rich Anderson for alerting me about this event. Unfortunately, I won't be there. But, it's great to be part of this site. SYB was a very important part of growing up in Sacramento and I treasure the memories. By the way, the school gym where we slept girls on one side & boys on the other was in Salinas. That memory came flooding back when I moved to the Monterey Peninsula about 20 years ago. How fun!

G'day Mates! Okayeee, I was the only Hocking family member who did not play an instrument that could be carried in a band... I played organ and piano. I have a piano in my home that all my 5 living children played. Bet none of you knew I ever played anything, eh? Well, I am retired from a transportation management consulting firm (Booz Allen & Hamilton), and presently having a wee bit of fun at the CHP Emergency Operations here in Sacto. Lived in Australia for a long time and came back to take care of my Dad, Bob Hocking (past SYB President for 2 seasons), after our Mum (Bette) died. Live now in the Pocket neighborhood of Sacto. The SYB was a huge part of our family culture. My brothers and sisters (I was the eldest) were forever active, it seems. Although I wasn't a member of the band, I was present at most of the practices and events during the '70-'72 years. Hearing Bill, Annette, Michael, Mary & Patrick practice every night whilst I was doing homework was truly an event in itself! How wonderful to have this reunion coming up! I do pray most of you will be able to at least come for the concert. For health reasons, I may only come to the concert, but, I do hope to spend at least part of the day earlier, with any many of you as possible. It will be sweet to visit with you... especially after all these years. Good on ya, Mates! Warmest regards, Jude Avery judeavery@aol.com 916.422.2923

What fun. Wish I could be there. My Mother, Minnie Anderson will be there for sure....and maybe my second daughter, Kristen. I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, retired Air Force fighter pilot, currently working as a defense contractor for Air Force Space Command. Divorced, 4 kids and 1 Grandson. Look on the alumni page for more information and a picture of my family. Have a great day, SYB. For those who remember, the drums in the tunnel in Disneyland's Fantasy on Parade!!! Killer! Feel free to contact me if you'd like to catch up on old times or just say 'Hi' to an old friend. 719-533-0526, r_anderson54@comcast.net.

I play trumpet still today after having played in SYB from 1971-1977. I hope to be a part of the 50th reunion. I just can't wait to meet you and the rest of the Band and Alumni. After having been a deadbeat all these years I find it fitting to see the light on our 50th celebration. Roy Mena the amazing clarinetist hooked up with me and here I am. Marjorie, are you related to Les Lehr my college jazz band director at American River College?? Okay if not it's still okay with me. Les was great!!
