Solutions Website: www.mcsideas.com Marital Status: Married No. of Children: 2 What year(s) were you in SYB?: 1967-71 What instrument(s) did you play?: Sax, Drums Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?: Taught & marched in drum & bugle corps and marching bands during college years. Now in Worship Team in Church (electric bass & singing) From Mark: Fall of 1965, invited to a rehearsal at Cal Jr. Hi, and never looked back. Played tenor sax back then, marched in my first-ever parade in November, and took my first-ever band bus trip in December (Disneyland). SYB had a way of creating something in everyone that simply never leaves.....friends then are still friends to this day, even after 40+ years. Memories of rehearsals, parades, concerts, summer camps, bus trips, and so much more are VIVID as I write this. Anyone want to know about the Hoo-Hah-La-De-Da marching band drum section? One legit percussionist, and a bunch of woodwind players, learning "rudiments" enough to create a 20-minute cadence (comprised of an SYB cadence plus 3 different high school candences), and then the infamous In-A-Godda-Da-Vida cadence which brought the house down in Alviso or Gustine or Gilroy or whatever Portuguese parade had the joy of hearing it.....Fergusons, Gaithers, Gury's and more mom's & dad's than any kid could ever want. And of course, Russ & Joe Kline's leadership. I am blessed to have been a part of it all, and relish the opportunity to attend and be part of the 50th reunion! |

Marital Status: Married No. of Children: 3 What year(s) were you in SYB?: 1959-1967 What instrument(s) did you play?: bassoon, sax Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?: have played continuously since high school (Burbank) including 4 years service in USAF Europe Band and college (U.C. Berkeley) nowadays I am still playing sax part-time professionally in addition to my main focus on recording work. I have not played bassoon in many years. Other Talents & Experience: professional recording engineer specializing in classical music working with conductors, composers and vocal/instrumental soloists in the Bay Area for live concerts, sessions, and CD production. From Bob: I was in the SYB from 1959-1967. My father, Chuck, was president for two terms in early 60s. He really enjoyed working with the kids, the many dedicated parents - and especially Russ, of course. He went on to be president of the Band Boosters at Burbank. Russ spoke at his memorial in 1994 and Erik Kleven played a very moving version of "Going Home" on electric bass. I started playing mellophone (in 4th grade at Riverside under Bud Harpham) when I first joined what was then the Sacramento Symphonic Youth Band (SSYB). I was struggling with lesson 9 in "Easy Steps" as I recall. But they welcomed me anyway. I soon took up bassoon and sax and have been playing ever since. I can still vividly recall my very first Youth Band concert wearing our white tux jackets in August 59' playing in the intense heat at the old green band shell in Land Park - and playing on several occasions at the old State Fair grounds every summer. Would you believe we had four person mellophone section: Stan Kline, Jim Windt, Phil Green (on alto sax) and me. We even played for an opening ceremony one year with Gov. Pat Brown. In those days the Youth Band was blessed with strong community support and we participated in many special events like the opening of Fairytale town, re-dedication of the Zoo, playing for the veterans at Yountville, Sacramento Solons, Chinese Year's Parade, St. Pat's Day parade, Lodi Grape Fesitival, Disneyland, N. California Tour, to name only a few. After High School (Burbank) I was in the USAF Europe Band from 1968-1972 with Erik Kleven and Tim Lawrence (who was an original band member from Russ's back yard). I was very fortunate to serve together with two other ex-SYB alums in the 65 piece band. Indeed we shared lots of fond memories from our many travels with the band. After college, I moved to San Jose and am married to Karen (Moniz) from Sacramento, who is a professional pianist. We have three boys who all play instruments (clarinet, classical guitar, and tuba). Karen and I also enjoy supporting music in the community and both very much appreciate having grown up in Sacramento in the 50s-60s with strong mentorship from the very talented and dedicated music teachers, supportive parents and wonderful youth music organizations to participate in. I look forward to meeting old friends at the reunion. Bob |

Marital Status: Single No. of Children: 1 What year(s) were you in SYB?: Forever! 60's and early 70's What instrument(s) did you play?: Flute/Piccolo Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?: yes! Other Talents & Experience: Play in a reggae band, Rebelution. From Donald : I had to be in SYB just to see my Dad. He and Russ were many times, inseperable. I grew-up in SYB and in the hay-day of school-based music programs, it was good to have SYB there to keep the music fun. I'll never forget those super-long Chinese New Year's parades in San Francisco and how band members use to fall out somewhere along the parade route. Think I threw-up myself once on one unusually hot summer parade-day. The memories..the buss trips that I could never be "badd" on because my Dad was ALWAYS there. Thanx Dad! You cared when other parents could/would not. I love you for that! You showed me how to be a Father. Something my contemporary African-American peers could use a few lessons on....Now, your grandson Alexzander has many examples, models and mentors who know how to demonstrate real human-hood. Who said the didactics of music education do not influence ALL aspects of youth development. Add a touch of parental involvement and voila, children grow-up to become respectful, participating adults. Now, as an adult Father, I now understand the true reason for founding for participating in SYB...even though we never realize it when we're young! For these reasons and so much more I salute my Father and SYB! Happy Birthday SYB! Russ, I know you gotta be smile'n knowing that your influence helped to shape so many young souls become real people. Congratulations!!! I love you Mommy and Daddy! You are the reason why, I am! PEACE ON EARTH!!! |

Occupation: Regional Manager
Marital Status: Married No. of Children: 3 From Michael: I was in the Sacramento Youth Band between 1965 uand 1969. I played a copper bell trumpet that my daughter Irene Alvarez also played the same trumpet in the Youth Band (1987/88). My fondest memories in music was with the Youth Band. I enjoyed the marching and trips most of all. We need more people like the Klein family and all the band supporters. I still have the original bell copper trumpet I started with although not played for many years. The Mayor of Sacramento needs to be at the upcoming reunion. The City of Sacramento need to honor the many who have contributed to this lasting organization. We all need to continue supporting this organization which is a foundation for youth confidence and opportunity. |
