ALUMNI REGISTRATION FORM

We need your help in finding out about you and locating other SYB Alumni.  Our purpose in gathering Alumni information is to reconnect to the people who WERE the Sacramento Youth Band, to form an information network, and to build a base of "Band Supporters" to help SYB continue into and through the next 50 years of presenting music to the public, but mostly to offer a fun and educational musical experience to young musicians in the Sacramento Metropolitan Area.

To register as an SYB Alumni, just click the ADD YOUR INFO box below and complete the attached form. Only the boxes with an asterisk are required, but feel free to add your personal thoughts as well.

Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?:
Played throughout college and into my career. Still playing in local community theater, marching and concert bands.
From Brad:
Well, after reading everyone else's bios, I guess I should expand mine a bit. I played drums in the band from 1977 until leaving for college in 1983. Junior Band under Jan Laing (spelling?), Senior Band under Russ Kline and Grant Parker, and drums/keyboard bass in the Jazz Band under Bob Lindefelt (sp?). Still have my old blue Jazz Band shirt. Many good times and fond rememberances. In 1983, went off to Humboldt State University to study Forestry, and traveled a lot with the Marching Lumberjacks. My major soon turned to Math/Computer Science, and eventually graduated with more music units than units in my major. Got a master's in Computer Science from UCDavis, and played in the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh. Now living in the South San Francisco Bay Area, working on security in the Java environment. Still playing in community bands, including one that travels quite a bit. So far, I've gigged on 5 of 7 continents, not sure where I'll play Antarctica. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the old friends with whom I've lost touch. The pic are the Wetmore boys and their wives. Where? Where else? Disneyland...

Other Talents & Experience:
I still play!!! I've got alot of great experiences, more so recently the past few years. I'll share them when I get with you all.
From Bill:
I got started in the Youth Band in 1971 and played until 1977. Over this period I went to C.K. McClatchy High School and was associated with some of the greatest musicians all because they were all great people. Great people was what the Youth Band was all about. I played trumpet in marching band, pep band, stage band. I then went on to American River College where I was in the Jazz Band under the direction of the illustrious Lester Lehr. I have played in many organizations but my roots go back most notably to Russ Kline. Words can't describe how blessed I was to know Russ and his amazing abilities conducting. I'll leave this message with ----Peace and Love to all I came in contact with. My wife Shari is certainly proud of my past. My roots. Bill Hocking

What year(s) were you in SYB?:  1970-1976
What instrument(s) did you play?:  clarinet
Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?:
American River College Concert Band, River City Theater Company orchestra pit, Capitol Pops Band, Ophir Prison Marching Kazoo Band and Temperance Society
Other Talents & Experience:
I am a football and basketball official. I also volunteer regularly at Kaiser, Blood Source, and Sacramento County.
From Roy:
I played clarinet in the SYB from 1970 to 1976, the best years and the best times of my youth. Russ Kline was a great leader and mentor. He inspired a lot of my passion for music and for being part of a musical organization. He was also a dear friend, along with the Yee, Gaither, and Hocking families. Some of my most precious memories are of laughing with my best friends during countless card games on countless SYB bus trips. They are still my best friends today: Kendall Yee, Steve Rock, Eric Borger, Bill Hocking, and Chuck Coppola. Most of us were also members of the McClatchy High School band. This is where I met my wife of 29 years, Mary. We have two wonderful children: Christine is 26 years old and married to her sweetheart, Adrian; Sean is 23 years old and will marry his high school sweetheart, Naomi, in November 2007. We adore our children and their mates, but we?re eager for grandchildren to spoil! In the meantime, I have my miniature schnauzer, Max, who was born on my birthday, a true sign that he was meant to be my buddy. I spent many years working in the transportation industry. But now I am living a dream by officiating football and basketball for high schools, middle schools, and community leagues. It is a wonderful opportunity to make a positive impact on children, just as the SYB did for me. I have also remained active in various musical activities over the years. I currently play, along with Bill Hocking, in the Ophir Prison Marching Kazoo Band and Temperance Society.

From Leslie:
I was in SYB from about 1975 to about 1981. I started on clarinet, and then switched to tenor. I also played piano in Jazz Band. Many fun memories of parades, bus trips, Disneyland, and friends. After JFK, I graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Genetics (and where I met my husband, a trumpet player in the Aggie Band-uh), and UC San Diego with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. I worked as a research scientist at a Maryland biotech company until our second daughter was born. Decided to stay at home with the girls for awhile, and still am! Our youngest is now in 2nd grade, so I'm guessing that I'll be going back to the career world soon. Right now, I volunteer at the girls' school, lead Girl Scout troops, am PTA Treasurer, pretty much drive kids around town to dance, music, soccer, etc... all the stuff everyone with kids does! We live in the San Diego area. My oldest plays alto, and the youngest is a drummer, though she plans to switch to Dad's instrument (trumpet) in 5th grade. My brother Eric's boys both play in SYB currently, and we have enjoyed watching them perform when visiting in Sacramento.

From Felicia:
I was music director from winter 1995 to fall of 1997. I was just starting the credential prgram when I got the job, so it was my very first professional conducting! Those were very good times. I really enjoyed the band and the musicians. I remember the parents being incredibly supportive too. I hated to leave, but found that being a first year teacher is VERY difficult and time consuming. Within a year I would meet my (now) husband and become a step mother too. Now I am in my 10th year of teaching, I am a mother of two and still avidly ride horses in my (ha!) spare time. I have played or had my students play in every Jazz Jubilee since 1990 (currently, The Syncopating Sea-Monkeys). I teach two bands, two choirs and piano class. I am happy that this web site has been constructed and look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion! :)
