We need your help in finding out about you and locating other SYB Alumni. Our purpose in gathering Alumni information is to reconnect to the people who WERE the Sacramento Youth Band, to form an information network, and to build a base of "Band Supporters" to help SYB continue into and through the next 50 years of presenting music to the public, but mostly to offer a fun and educational musical experience to young musicians in the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. To register as an SYB Alumni, just click the ADD YOUR INFO box below and complete the attached form. Only the boxes with an asterisk are required, but feel free to add your personal thoughts as well. |

It certainly helps relieve the stress after a hard days work! From Karen: Being in the SYB was one of the highlights of my Jr & Sr. High school days. The friends, the travels, the parades, the Monday night practices. I looked forward to them all. Music and SYB was a major part of my life then. I've passed that love onto my 2 daughters. My youngest, Jennifer Valdez has released her first album (you can find it at "The Beat" on J Street). She writes and performs her own songs - alternative rock. Check her out at the website listed here. |

Occupation: RN
Marital Status: Single No. of Children: 2 What year(s) were you in SYB?: 72-76 What instrument(s) did you play?: flute/picc Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?: 6th Army Band Watsonville Band in the late 80's very early 90's Nothing since, except to entertainment myself and the pets (2 dogs, 1 cat) They just look at me funny Other Talents & Experience: RN-lifeflight/ER Now provide legal consults on malpractice/negligence stuff and work weeksends still nursing Scuba Dive every chance I get raise teenagers-my own and extras- I take in kids with problems and am working on raising my second extra, my last extra is now 25 with 2 kids of her own, Life is good...SYB helped form me From Stacey: IT was funny I had really put the SYB in the "old file" memory bank until I took on an "extra teenager". One of my son's friedns had some trouble and needed a home and I took him in. (This is why I say I have two children) Will was an SYB member and it was like "wow, I did that when I was your age". Then taking Will to Monday night band practice, who do I run into but Mike Duffek. It was a case of "you look really familar". Since then (Summer 2006) Will still participates in band and I got to go on another road trip, last summer taking the band to Disneyland-Boy did that bring back some memories. Do you think the chaparones laughted at our trying to get away with stuff the way I did, on this trip? It definetely was a case of whatever they could think of I had either thought of at thier age or tried to get away with at thier age...How many times the "boss" would shake his head at me and advise what a "nice" girl would do, versus what I was up to. After high school and SYB I went on to join the Army in the 6th Army band stationed out of the Presidio. Did this from 1976 til 84. then went to college, realized fairly early that I wasn't a "star" musician, just loved playing, but performing was a chore. SO I switched majors in college, got my BSN (Bacholr's in nursing) and in 2004 I got a double master's in nursing and business. Right now I work two jobs, both nursing but one I do in a suit the other (P/T) I do in scrubs (working for Sheriff's Department-main jail) Raising my "boys" and traveling at least 4-6 weeks a year to scuba dive in wamr water-Going to Australia for a month end of September-(can't wait) Look forward to seeing and playing with you all at the reunion. |

Website: web.mac.com/btrimble/ Marital Status: Married No. of Children: 2 What year(s) were you in SYB?: 1964 to 1972 What instrument(s) did you play?: Saxophone and Bassoon Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?: I've recently picked up the bassoon again and its been great. From Brian: As much as I enjoyed the people and the fun we had playing together, I knew I was not cut out to be a professional musician. Sure, I learned a lot about not sticking out by playing a wrong note, just try and blend in with the other instruments playing your part. And sometimes it really sounded good! I remember one time Russ stopping a song we were practicing just to hear the beautiful harmony of the French horn, baritone, bass clarinet and bassoon part-wish I could remember what song that was.... Lots of fond memories. The Band was a big part of my growing up. Alas, by the time I reached my senior year of high school I realized I was not going to make a career out of being a musician and I dropped out of the Band. For many years I pursued what I am better at, medicine. Now that I have some time and a friend, and fellow bassoon player, to encourage me, I've picked up the bassoon again. What a privilege to have an opportunity to play with the Band again. Its like getting back to one's roots, or something. I am very much looking forward to playing with you guys again. |
