What year(s) were you in SYB?:  1976-1986
What instrument(s) did you play?:  Trumpet
Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?:
After leaving SYB in 1986, I played for one year with the CSUS Jazz Ensemble. During that time, I was also the leader of a Dixieland and jazz band that played at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and various other locales. In 1988, I played in the Cal Poly Pomona Jazz Ensemble. After returning to Sacramento in 1988, I took a break from music in order to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. I returned to music in 1997/1998 and played with the Cosumnes River College Jazz Ensemble. Since then, I haven't had the opportunity to play, but I'm really looking forward to picking up my trumpet and playing again in the Reunion Band!!
From Gary:
I have such fond memories of the Sacramento Youth Band, from my early years as the little guy in the Stage Band, to the later years when I got so many opportunities to be a soloist which built up my confidence and self-esteem.  I made so many friends and experienced so many "firsts" in my life during my time with the band.  I miss the comraderie and fun that we all had.  They are times that I will never forget.

It's so hard to believe that I've been away for over 20 years, and it's even harder to believe that it's been 50 years since SYB's inception.

My hat goes off to those who have kept the organization going all those years, especially Mike Duffek, who has been a mainstay and driving force in keeping the band going, even during the lean years.

I'm looking forward to the opportunity to reconnect with old friends at the reunion.  I hope to see some of you there!!

No. of Children:  2
What year(s) were you in SYB?:  1973-1979
What instrument(s) did you play?:  clarinet/bass clarinet
Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?:
Yes, in college and at UOP for summer music camp. For the last 15 years, I have mainly sang in church and The River City Chorale, but I took instrument lessons for many years from Janice (Laing)Ranton, SYB musician Steve Rock, and from a local Piano instructor. I have never forgotten how to play and I still own a clarinet.
Other Talents & Experience:
I work in transportation for the San Juan District and work especially with handicapped students. Music is great therapy for children and I enjoy new ways of bringing it to them.
From Christina:
I started in the Junior band in 1973. Janice Laing Ranton was also my school band teacher. I played until my Senior year in high school when my interests broadened to vocal training and that has been my main music focus since. I remember friends, parades, wool uniforms in the middle of July in Reno, bus trips, Mr. O'Shauneesey, William Land Park and Hiram Johnson concerts. Not all happy memories, but ones that had positive impacts on my life.

Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?:
Only to appreciate music and the musicans who make it happen.
From Mary:
Lots of memories with my brother, Casey and Dad, Bill.  We were all active in the Bands.  Junior, Senior and Swinging Senators.  It just wasn't a Summer without a Tux.

I enjoyed reading Richard Anderson's comments which brought back even more memories.  My friendships in those days with Susan Brown and Dennis Marie Pollock, bring a smile to my face.  The 60's were a crazy time, but things like the SYB Music kept me grounded.  I remember all the fun we had.

I also remembered The Sacramento Saddle-Ites who were championship baton twirlers who played with us at William Landpark and at the Denver Broncos/Raiders half time show and in many parades.  The band was always evolving.

My brother and I also took Music Lesson at Kline Music like alot of the other band members.  Lots of practice.

Sold Candy and Fireworks Door to Door, in those days to help fund the band.  I saw Mr Gaither at the Fireworks stand in South Land Park a couple of years ago.  He is like the Energizer Bunny, what a Great Guy.

I remember making a record in a sound studio, what a great experience.  I also recall playing with the Swinging Senators one season at a fair and playing backup music for Dan Blocker (Hoss Cartwright from TV's Bonanza).  Playing at Travis AFB for Vietnam Servicemen, as well as retirement homes, fairs and many parades.

I appreciate and am glad to have been a part of the SYB and especially Thank Russ Kline, and all the others who made it possible.

After the band I went to school, and got to go with some friends to Europe for 6 weeks in 1972.  Went to work for a few years.

I married my husband Bob in 1977 and we moved to Southern California for about 23 years.  Moved back into Sacramento in 2000 after my Mother past.

We have one daughter Christy (played Flute in High School)who lives with her husband Mario, (Professional Drummer) and Grandson Marshall in the Dallas, Tx area.

Have you used your musical talents since participating in SYB?:
I played in the Sac City marching and concert band for two years after high school. I haven't touched the trombone since and probably have no clue how to play it.
From Walt:
I started in the Junior Band when it was first formed in 1963.  Moved up to the Senior Band in 1964.  I have  great memories from those long-ago innocent times...band camp at Camp Sacramento, the annual concerts, the Northern Calif. tour, the many parades, the practices at Juaquin Miller jr. high, Fern Bacon jr. high, California jr. high, and the long-gone Stanford jr. high.  The parades were the most fun, blasting "Stars and Stripes Forever", and my favorite, "Rockin' Rhythm".  Who was that band we always had to beat?  The Weldonians, I believe....l took lessons from Bob Lindfeldt at the Kline home and later at Kline Music on Franklin Blvd.  I was very sorry to hear of his passing a couple of years ago.  Bob and Russ, you'll be greatly missed at the reunion...
