About

There were only 17 students set to play on that faithful day in June 1957 when the Sacramento Youth Band held its first rehearsal. More than 65 years later, hundreds of students from around the Sacramento Region have benefitted both musically and educationally by playing and performing in SYB’s Concert, Jazz and Symphonic bands.

Over the many decades, since founded by W. Russell Kline of Kline Music, band members have performed in venues ranging from Broadway Sacramento’s The Music Circus, California’s State Capitol, Sacramento History Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, in San Francisco’s Union District, and regularly perform at local and area events, fairs, festivals and parades including Sacramento’s annual Mardi Gras Parade and the Sacramento Hot Jazz Jubilee.

Students rehearse weekly at rehearsal space sponsored by St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in South Sacramento. Membership includes the commitment to rehearse and perform at events.
